Key takeaways
- Running Mode is Premium-only, on iOS and Android, in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
- An optional setting, Adjust song speed to match BPM, stretches songs to your target; leave it off and songs keep their own speed.
- Running Mode does not read your cadence. You pick the BPM, and Spotify says 160 is the most popular setting.
- The original Spotify Running read your pace from phone sensors in 2015 and was retired on February 26, 2018.
What does Spotify Running Mode do?
Running Mode lives in Spotify's Fitness hub. You start from one of 25 presets, then shape the session: a workout type (Intervals, Pyramids, Easy, or longer advanced runs), a length from 10 to 90 minutes, a genre such as pop, EDM, country or hip-hop, and how much new music you want. A 20-minute Just Run option skips the setup.
Under Beat Matching you set a target BPM. Behind each session is a text prompt, powered by Spotify's Prompted Playlist, which you can open with View prompt and rewrite in your own words. Sessions refresh daily, and optional English audio cues coach you through structured workouts.

How do I turn on Spotify Running Mode?
Set up a Running Mode session
Open the Fitness hub
In the Spotify app, go to the Fitness hub. If you cannot see Running Mode there, search for "Running Mode" directly; at launch, Techlicious had to find it that way.
Pick a preset
Choose one of the presets, or Just Run for a quick 20-minute session.
Set the workout
Choose the workout type, the length (10 to 90 minutes), a genre and the discovery level.
Choose your BPM
Turn on Beat Matching and set the target BPM. Turn on Adjust song speed to match BPM if you want each song stretched to that tempo.
Decide on coaching
Leave the English audio cues on for structured sessions, or turn them off to hear only music.
Why is Spotify Running Mode not showing?
- You are on Spotify Free. Running Mode is for Premium subscribers only.
- You are outside the seven countries. As of October 2026 it is only in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. It is not available in Latin America yet.
- Your app is out of date. Android support arrived on August 18, 2026. Update Spotify from your app store and restart it.
- You are looking in the wrong place. It sits in the Fitness hub, but search for "Running Mode" if the hub does not show it.
- The rollout has not reached you. Spotify features roll out gradually. If everything above checks out, try again in a few days.
Is Spotify Running Mode on Android?
Yes. It launched on iPhone only on July 30, 2026, then reached Android on August 18, 2026, in the same seven countries and still for Premium only. If you are on Android in one of those countries and cannot see it, update the app first.
Does Spotify Running Mode change the song tempo?
It can. Spotify's August 2026 guide describes a setting called Adjust song speed to match BPM for a consistent rhythm; leave it off and every track keeps its original feel. Spotify has not published how far it will stretch a song, or whether songs hand over on the beat.
What Running Mode does not do is follow you. It never measures your cadence, so the BPM is a number you choose. Marathon Handbook noted the interval pop preset's prompt asks for songs around 150 BPM, lower than many runners' natural rhythm. Measure your own steps first. Our running BPM guide explains how.

Spotify Running Mode
Running Mode is a smart comeback: real workout structure, coaching cues, editable prompts, Spotify's enormous catalog and now an optional song-speed setting. It is held back by its reach (Premium only, seven countries) and by not measuring your cadence, and Spotify has not said how it handles tempo stretching or transitions.

Boulevard Run ModeOur app

- Price
- Free to listen, no account needed (Oct 2026)
- Best for
- Runners anywhere who want every song locked to their step, for free
Pros
- Free, any browser, any country

Find your BPM before you pick one
Whichever app you use, the BPM only helps if it matches your feet. Runners tend to fall into step with music only within about 2% of their own cadence, so a guess can do more harm than good. Jog on the spot and tap along with your steps below for about 20 taps.
Tap with your steps
Run or jog in place and tap the button on every step. 12 to 20 taps give a steady reading.
Then try that number in Run Mode, or jump to our 160 BPM, 170 BPM and 180 BPM song pages.

Frequently asked questions
Is Spotify Running Mode free?
No. Running Mode is for Spotify Premium subscribers only, and Premium Individual costs $12.99 a month in the US as of October 2026. Spotify Free users do not get it. Boulevard's Run Mode is a free alternative that works in any browser.
Which countries have Spotify Running Mode?
As of October 2026, Running Mode is available to Premium users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, on both iOS and Android. Spotify has not announced other countries, so it is not available in Latin America or most of Europe yet.
Why can't I find Running Mode on Spotify?
Check four things: you need Premium, you need to be in one of the seven launch countries, your app must be up to date, and you may need to search for Running Mode instead of browsing the Fitness hub. If all four check out, the rollout may simply not have reached your account yet.
Is Spotify Running Mode available on Android?
Yes. It launched on iPhone on July 30, 2026, and reached Android on August 18, 2026, in the same seven countries. Update the Spotify app from Google Play if you do not see it.
Does Spotify Running Mode speed songs up to match my BPM?
Only if you ask it to. Spotify describes an optional setting, Adjust song speed to match BPM, that changes song speed for a consistent rhythm; with it off, songs play at their original speed. Spotify has not published how much it stretches songs or whether transitions land on the beat.
Does Spotify Running Mode work with Apple Watch or Garmin?
Spotify's Running Mode announcements do not mention Apple Watch, Garmin or Strava integration, and Running Mode does not read cadence from any device: you set the BPM yourself. Separately, Strava has removed its Spotify controls from its Record screen.
What BPM should I choose in Running Mode?
Choose your own cadence, not a default. Spotify says 160 BPM is the most popular setting and that many runners aim for 170 to 180. Tap your steps for about 20 taps at your normal effort and use that number; you can raise it gradually later.
What happened to Spotify Running?
Spotify Running launched in May 2015 and used your phone's sensors to pick songs matching your running tempo, including original tracks that adapted as you ran. Spotify retired it on February 26, 2018, and pointed users to workout playlists. Running Mode, launched in 2026, is its successor but does not read your tempo.
