Almost Friends

Almost Friends lyrics

Verse 1

You texted back so fast
like it was nothing
like we were already
something
Every day for a month
my phone stayed warm
then you went quiet
like that was normal

Pre-Chorus

I kept your name there
at the top of my screen
like maybe that meant
what I thought it means
And I was easy
and you were close
and then you weren't
I don't know

Chorus

Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
I can say it out loud
almost friends
Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
and that is the part
that still gets me

Verse 2

You knew my order
my worst little habits
the way I go silent
when I overthink it
I knew your laugh
that one half-smile
the way you said "later"
and meant "for a while"

Pre-Chorus

I keep replaying
the tiny goodbyes
the way you faded
right in front of my eyes
No fight, no breakup
just a thin little thread
that held for a second
then quit instead

Chorus

Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
I can say it out loud
almost friends
Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
and that is the part
that still gets me

Bridge

Maybe that was all
we were ever going to be
two people talking
like it could be easy
I don't hate you
I don't even try
I just miss the shape
of what never arrived

Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
I can say it out loud
almost friends
Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
and that is the part
that still gets me
Almost friends, almost friends
we were almost friends
now it sits in my chest
where a yes should've been
