Key takeaways
- Xania Monet hit No. 1 on Billboard's R&B Digital Song Sales (chart dated Sept 20, 2025), before Breaking Rust's country No. 1.
- Breaking Rust's 'Walk My Walk' topped Country Digital Song Sales in November 2025 with about 3,000 downloads.
- The biggest AI-assisted hit is still The Beatles' 'Now and Then': UK No. 1, Hot 100 No. 7, a Grammy.
- Sweden (Jan 2026) and Australia (Aug 2026) now keep wholly AI songs off their official charts; Billboard labels them instead.
"AI song" covers very different things, so this list labels each one. Some are fully AI-generated: vocals and music made by a model, usually with a human writing lyrics or steering. Some are AI-assisted: human recordings where AI did one job, like rescuing a vocal. And some are deepfakes: AI copies of a real artist's voice. The charts treat them very differently, and so should you.
AI chart history, from 2023 to now
Heart on My Sleeve: the viral deepfake
A song with AI-cloned Drake and The Weeknd vocals by an anonymous creator, Ghostwriter977, reaches about 15 million TikTok views and 600,000 Spotify streams before Universal has it removed. Never charts, changes everything.
Now and Then: AI-assisted, Beatles-sized
Machine learning separates John Lennon's voice from a 1970s demo. The single goes to No. 1 in the UK, No. 7 on the Hot 100 and later wins the Grammy for Best Rock Performance.
BBL Drizzy: the AI sample
Metro Boomin samples a Drake parody made with Udio by comedian Willonius Hatcher. The beat passes 3.3 million SoundCloud streams in a week, the first notable AI sample in mainstream hip-hop.
Xania Monet's first No. 1
"How Was I Supposed to Know?" tops Billboard's R&B Digital Song Sales (chart dated Sept 20). "Let Go, Let God" later reaches No. 3 on Hot Gospel Songs.
AI reaches radio
Xania Monet debuts at No. 30 on Adult R&B Airplay, the first known AI act on a Billboard radio chart.
Breaking Rust tops country sales
"Walk My Walk" hits No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales. Billboard counts at least six AI acts on its charts, including Cain Walker (country) and Solomon Ray (gospel).
Sweden draws a line
Jacub's "Jag vet, du är inte min" hits No. 1 on Spotify's Sweden Top 50 with 6.3 million plays. IFPI Sweden keeps it off the official chart because it is mainly AI-generated.
An AI-assisted UK hit
"Papaoutai (Afro Soul)" by Chill77 and Unjaps peaks at No. 68 on the UK Official Singles Chart and becomes the most-streamed AI-assisted song of early 2026.
IngaRose tops iTunes
"Celebrate Me", made with Suno, reaches No. 1 on US iTunes and in several other countries, but makes little impact on streaming charts.
An AI-vocal cover in Australia
A Josh Fawaz track peaks at No. 2 on ARIA's Top 20 Australian Singles chart, and a debate over its AI vocals follows it all the way to ARIA's rule change.
Charts pick a side
ARIA excludes wholly AI recordings from the chart dated Aug 31. Billboard instead pledges to identify AI songs on its charts, backed by Luminate's new AI detection.

What was the first AI song to hit No. 1?
On a Billboard chart, the earliest we can verify is Xania Monet's "How Was I Supposed to Know?", No. 1 on R&B Digital Song Sales on the chart dated September 20, 2025. Breaking Rust's "Walk My Walk" is often called the first, but it topped Country Digital Song Sales in November, about two months later. Both were sales charts, not the main streaming-driven lists.

Why do AI songs chart on sales charts first?
Because sales charts are small. Very few people still buy single tracks, so a few thousand downloads can top a genre sales chart, as TIME pointed out about "Walk My Walk". Streaming and radio charts need sustained listening from a lot of people, which is much harder to manufacture. Critics raised similar doubts about IngaRose's iTunes No. 1 in April 2026, arguing bulk buying could move a chart that thin.
That is also why the genres matter. AI acts first broke through in gospel, country and adult R&B, formats where download sales still carry real weight on the charts and where a steady, polished vocal fits the brief. None of these acts has yet held a spot on the big streaming-driven charts for long.
Has an AI song ever been on the Billboard Hot 100?
An AI-assisted one has: "Now and Then" reached No. 7 in November 2023. For fully AI-generated songs, we could not verify a Hot 100 entry as of October 2026, and Luminate, which supplies Billboard's data, said in July 2026 that individual AI-generated tracks had yet to make a lasting impact on listening. Billboard's response has been transparency: it said in August 2026 it would identify AI songs on its charts rather than ban them.
Are charts banning AI songs?
Some are. IFPI Sweden kept Jacub's hit off the official chart in January 2026, saying mainly AI-generated songs don't qualify. Australia's ARIA charts excluded wholly AI recordings from the end of August 2026 while still allowing human records with AI in a supporting role, and IFPI says it is working with more than 20 national chart programs on similar principles. More on that fight in should AI music be banned?
