Is AI music taking over? Uploads yes, listening not yet

AI music is taking over uploads, not listening. More than half of the songs delivered to Deezer on peak days in June 2026 were fully AI-generated, yet they drew only 1 to 3% of streams. On the charts, AI acts have reached niche sales and airplay lists, not the mainstream top tier.

Key takeaways

  • Deezer gets about 90,000 fully AI tracks a day, more than half of new deliveries on peak days (June 2026).
  • Fully AI music is only 1 to 3% of Deezer streams, up from about 0.5% in September 2025.
  • The top AI-assisted song of early 2026 ranked No. 282 globally on Luminate's midyear report.
  • Chart bodies are responding: Sweden and Australia keep wholly AI songs off official charts; Billboard labels them.

There are two very different questions hiding inside "is AI music taking over?" One is about supply: how much of the music arriving on streaming services is made by AI. The other is about demand: how much of what people actually play is AI. In 2026 those two numbers are wildly apart, and the gap is the whole story.

How much new music is AI-generated?

Deezer is the only big service that publishes a running count. Its detector flags fully AI-generated tracks as they arrive, and the count has risen ninefold in 18 months. In April 2026 that meant more than two million fully AI tracks a month.

  • Sep 202530,000tracks
  • Nov 202550,000tracks
  • Jan 202660,000tracks

  • Jun 202690,000tracks

How much of what people stream is AI?

Very little. Deezer says fully AI music is between 1 and 3% of total streams, and a large share of even that is fake. Up to 85% of the streams on fully AI tracks in 2025 were fraudulent, according to Deezer, meaning bot accounts playing tracks to siphon royalties.

Uploads vs. listening: fully AI music on Deezer
  • Share of daily uploads, peak days (Jun 2026)50%
  • Share of daily uploads (Jan 2026)39%
  • Share of streams, upper estimate (2026)3%
  • Share of streams (Sep 2025)0.5%

Luminate, which supplies Billboard's chart data, reached the same conclusion from the other side. In its 2026 midyear report, the most-streamed AI-assisted song, an Afro soul version of "Papaoutai" credited to Chill77 and Unjaps, had 210.7 million global audio streams in the first 24 weeks of the year. That was enough for No. 282 globally. Respectable, not a takeover.

“Individual AI-generated tracks have yet to make a profound, long-term impact on consumption behavior.”
Jaime Marconette, Luminate (July 2026)

Is AI music taking over Spotify?

Spotify does not publish an AI share, so nobody outside the company knows the exact number. What we do know: Spotify removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the 12 months before September 2025, and several AI acts reached big audiences there before most listeners knew what they were. The Velvet Sundown passed one million monthly listeners in July 2025. Sienna Rose, a neo-soul act Deezer says its detector flags as AI, had close to three million in January 2026.

Spotify's own answer to the creep is labeling, not banning. Artist profiles with AI-generated identities now get an "AI Persona" badge and are left out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless you follow them. By October 20, 2026, Spotify said thousands of AI Personas were labeled, more than 50 million slop and spam tracks had been pulled from recommendations that year, and tracks likely made with AI were 10 times more likely than others to miss its 1,000-stream royalty threshold. That last number says a lot about how much real listening AI tracks get. See our list of AI artists on Spotify for who has been caught so far.

Is AI music taking over the charts?

AI acts have reached charts, but mostly the smaller ones: digital sales, genre and airplay lists where a few thousand downloads or a burst of radio spins can move a song. Billboard counted at least six AI acts on its charts by early November 2025.

Why the gap between uploads and listening?

  • Most uploads are not made to be heard. Mass uploads exist to catch stray streams or to feed fraud, and Deezer says up to 85% of 2025 streams on fully AI tracks were fake.
  • Platforms keep them out of sight. Deezer keeps fully AI tracks out of recommendations and editorial playlists; Spotify does the same for labeled AI Personas by default.
  • People choose names. 40% of streaming users told Ipsos they would skip a fully AI song, and 45% want to filter it out.
  • Quality is uneven. 51% expect AI to mean more generic, low-quality music on streaming services, per the same 2025 survey.

What would a real AI takeover look like?

Watch three numbers. First, AI's share of streams: if Deezer's 1 to 3% climbs into double digits without the fraud, listeners are choosing it. Second, the mainstream charts: a fully AI song in the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Top 40 would be a different era. Third, money: the CISAC study projects AI music could account for about 20% of streaming services' revenues by 2028. None of those lines had been crossed by October 2026.

Our honest read, as a company that makes an AI music app: the takeover story is mostly a volume story. The listening story is slower and depends on whether AI music gets good and honest enough that people pick it on purpose. That is the test Boulevard puts itself to, with a small, human-reviewed catalog instead of a flood.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of music on Spotify is AI?

Spotify does not publish that number. The best public benchmark is Deezer: fully AI-generated tracks were more than half of its daily uploads on peak days in June 2026 but only 1 to 3% of total streams. Spotify has said it removed over 75 million spammy tracks in the year to September 2025 and labels AI-generated artist identities as AI Personas.

How many AI songs are uploaded every day?

Deezer reported about 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks a day in June 2026, up from about 10,000 a day in January 2025. In April 2026 it said that added up to more than two million AI tracks a month. These counts only include fully AI-generated music, not songs where AI only helped.

Is AI music becoming more popular?

Slowly. Deezer's streaming share for fully AI music rose from about 0.5% in September 2025 to between 1 and 3% in 2026, and a few AI acts reached millions of monthly Spotify listeners. But much of the listening is fraud, and Luminate said in July 2026 that individual AI tracks had not yet changed consumption behavior in a lasting way.

Has an AI song reached the Billboard Hot 100?

As far as we could verify by October 2026, no fully AI-generated song had been confirmed on the Hot 100. AI acts have reached smaller Billboard charts: Breaking Rust and Xania Monet both hit No. 1 on digital song sales charts in 2025, and Xania Monet reached No. 30 on Adult R&B Airplay.

Why is there so much AI music if few people listen?

Because uploading costs almost nothing. Mass uploads catch stray streams, and some are made purely for streaming fraud: Deezer says up to 85% of streams on fully AI tracks in 2025 were fraudulent. Platforms are now demonetizing those streams and keeping AI tracks out of recommendations, which should shrink the incentive.
