How to tell if a song is AI: 7 checks that still work in 2026

To tell if a song is AI, check the artist before the audio. No live shows, no interviews, dozens of releases in a few months, an AI tag on Deezer or an AI Persona badge on Spotify are stronger clues than any sound. Ear tests are failing: in a 2025 Ipsos test, 97% of people could not tell.

Key takeaways

  • Investigate the artist, not the waveform: missing live history and a release flood are the strongest clues.
  • Look for platform labels: Deezer tags fully AI albums, and Spotify began badging AI Personas from mid-September 2026.
  • Detectors help but can be fooled, and most only flag fully AI tracks, not AI-assisted ones.
  • Audio and lyric tells are fading fast: 97% of 9,000 people failed a three-track blind test in 2025.

Two years ago you could often catch an AI song by ear: a metallic shimmer on the vocal, words that slurred into each other, a chorus that never quite resolved. Those tells are disappearing with every model release. The good news is that the evidence has moved, not vanished. It lives around the song now, in the artist's footprint, the platform's labels and the credits.

The 7-step AI song check

  1. Check the artist's human footprint

Search for live dates, interviews, named band members and photos or video from real places. The Velvet Sundown passed a million Spotify listeners in 2025 with no record of a single gig and promo images that looked fake. Sienna Rose never performed live or answered interview requests.

  2. Count the releases

A brand-new act with dozens of songs in a few months is a red flag. Sienna Rose put out at least 45 songs and ten albums between September and December 2025, then changed its whole visual identity twice.

  3. Look for a platform label

Deezer tags albums its detector flags as fully AI. Spotify said it would show an AI Persona badge on AI-generated artist profiles from mid-September 2026, in the banner, About section, search and track rows. Apple Music told partners in August 2026 that 'Made with AI' labels would arrive later in the year.

  4. Read the credits and registrations

Since April 2026 Spotify has shown AI Credits in Song Credits on mobile, based on disclosures labels and distributors submit under the DDEX standard; Spotify says it gets tens of thousands a day. Disclosure is voluntary, so silence proves nothing. Songwriting registrations help too: a Swedish journalist traced the AI-made hit by 'Jacub' through its publishing records.

  5. Run it through a detector

In June 2026 Deezer launched a free tool that scans playlists from about 20 streaming services for AI tracks. Treat any result as a lead, not a verdict, and see the limits below.

  6. Listen for tells, but weigh them lightly

Smeared consonants, breaths in odd places, a vocal that never strains, an ending that dissolves instead of landing. Video can give more away than audio: TikTok users spotted merging teeth and garbled lettering in Sienna Rose clips.

  7. Read the lyrics last

Vague, interchangeable imagery is a hint, but a weak one. Several AI acts use lyrics written by people: Xania Monet's creator writes her words, and IngaRose's bio says 'Human written lyrics'.

How do you tell if a song is AI on Spotify?

Start with the artist page. Look for the AI Persona badge, which Spotify began showing from mid-September 2026 on profiles whose identity is AI-generated, starting with the most-streamed. By October 20 it said thousands were labeled. Then open Song Credits in the Now Playing view on mobile and check for an AI Credit, a feature live since April 2026. Spotify says labeled AI Personas are kept out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, so if one shows up in your feed, it is usually because you followed it.

Spotify does not ban AI music. It bans unauthorized voice clones of real artists and filters spam. A tool to report suspected unlabeled AI Personas was promised for later in 2026. If you simply don't want an artist, the mobile app's 'Don't play this artist' option on the artist page hides them from your listening.

Do AI music detectors actually work?

They work well on what they were trained on. Deezer's researchers showed in 2024 that a classifier could hit 99.8% accuracy on their test set, but they called the problem "easy but actually hard": real-world detection must cope with new models it has never seen, audio that has been edited or re-encoded, and the cost of wrongly flagging a human artist. Most tools, including Deezer's, are built to catch fully AI-generated tracks, not songs where AI only helped.

What counts as an AI song anyway?

The line is blurrier than the debate suggests. In July 2026, IFPI and partners including the RIAA and the Recording Academy introduced a labeling standard with two tiers. AI-Generated means AI made the whole recording or its main creative parts, such as the lead vocal. AI-Assisted means people made it, with some AI-generated elements. The labels cover recordings only, not lyrics, composition or cover art.

By that standard plenty of celebrated music is AI-assisted. The Beatles' 2023 single "Now and Then" used machine learning to separate John Lennon's voice from an old demo, went to No. 1 in the UK and won a Grammy. Nobody calls it an AI song. That is the point: the question that matters is usually who made the creative choices, not whether software was involved.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that detects AI music?

Yes. In June 2026 Deezer launched a free online tool that scans playlists from about 20 streaming services for AI-generated tracks, and other detectors exist. They are useful leads, not proof: they are strongest on fully AI tracks from known models and weaker on new models, edited audio and songs where AI only assisted.

How can you tell if a singer is AI?

Look for a human trail: live performances, interviews, videos shot in real places and collaborators who are real people. AI acts like The Velvet Sundown and Sienna Rose had none of that. Also check for a Deezer AI tag or a Spotify AI Persona badge, and be wary of an artist who releases dozens of songs in a few months.

Does Spotify label AI music?

Partly. Since April 2026 Spotify has shown AI Credits in Song Credits when labels and distributors disclose AI use, and in August 2026 it announced AI Persona badges for AI-generated artist identities, rolling out from mid-September. It does not label every song made with AI, and it does not ban AI music, only unauthorized voice clones and spam.

Can AI music detectors be wrong?

Yes, in both directions. Deezer claims 99.8% accuracy for its own tool, with about 2 misses per 1,000 AI tracks and fewer than 1 false flag per 10,000 human tracks, but those figures are not independently tested. Detectors can also miss songs from new models or audio that has been altered, which their own researchers acknowledge.

Why can't I hear the difference anymore?

Because the models improved fast and the obvious artifacts are mostly gone. In Deezer's 2025 Ipsos survey, 97% of 9,000 people failed a blind test of three tracks, and 71% were surprised by their result. Context clues about the artist now beat listening for glitches.

Is it bad to like a song that turns out to be AI?

No. Liking a sound is not a moral choice. What matters is whether you were misled and who gets paid. Most listeners in the Ipsos survey wanted fully AI music labeled so they can decide for themselves, which is a reasonable standard to hold platforms and artists to.
