The afternoon kept going without us

The afternoon kept going without us lyrics

Verse 1

You were beside me on the couch
The sun kept crossing the floor
We never said who’s leaving
We just let the screen go dim
Your hand stayed warm on my sleeve
Like it had nowhere to go
I watched the afternoon bend
And I didn’t ask for more

Chorus

The afternoon kept going
without us
The afternoon kept going
without us
You looked at the door once
Then back at the TV glow
The afternoon kept going
without us

Verse 2

Now the room has that pale blue
The kind that lives in old glass
Your laugh drifts off the wallpaper
Then lands somewhere in the hall
That clock in the kitchen keeps slipping
Through its small wooden teeth
And you say maybe later
Like later still belongs to us

Pre-Chorus

I could reach for your wrist
I could make a scene
But your eyes go soft and distant
Like rain on a screen
So I stay where I am
You stay where you are
And the air between us
Turns slow and large

Chorus

The afternoon kept going
without us
The afternoon kept going
without us
You looked at the door once
Then back at the TV glow
The afternoon kept going
without us

Bridge

Maybe we were already
half a mile apart
While we shared the same blanket
And the same old dark
I hear you breathe beside me
Like a song I used to know
Then you turn your face away
And let the evening show

Chorus

The afternoon kept going
without us
The afternoon kept going
without us
You let the last light cross us
Like it knew where to go
The afternoon kept going
without us

Outro

Without us
Without us
The afternoon kept going
without us
