We Wait and We Wait

We Wait and We Wait lyrics

Verse 1

Five p.m. at the stop
Painted time on the pole
Cardboard bus in the lane
Like a joke with no punchline
The crowd stands polite and still
Umbrellas tucked at their knees
That lamp keeps changing its mind
Blue to green to sickly white

Pre-Chorus

We all lean, then lean back
As if it might arrive
A shoe squeaks on the curb
Nobody loses their smile
The schedule peels at one corner
Like it knows what I know

Chorus

Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
We wait and we wait
By the bent-up curb
Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
The card-board bus just stares
And we stay so polite

Verse 2

A kid counts the blinking colors
Like coins in a paper cup
A man checks his empty wrist
Then checks it once again
The pole reads seven routes
But the paint has run in rain
Even the pigeons step back
From the same old painted lane

Pre-Chorus

The air tastes like waiting
And shoe polish on stone
Somebody laughs too softly
Then folds into a yawn
That timetable's a mural
Of where we never go

Chorus

Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
We wait and we wait
By the bent-up curb
Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
The card-board bus just stares
And we stay so polite

Bridge

Yo, I seen that stop sign breathe
Seen the clock lose its teeth
Painted route, paper promise
Whole block stuck in a loop with me
Old lady said, “It’ll come”
Then she shrugged like, “maybe”
Streetlamp switching colors on us
Like it got a mind of its own, see

Chorus

Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
We wait and we wait
By the bent-up curb
Green means nothing here
Green means nothing here
The card-board bus just stares
And we stay so polite

Outro

Five p.m. still hanging
On the pole and on the shoes
Green means nothing here
But we keep our places too
