Leave it on the sill

Leave it on the sill lyrics

Verse 1

Sunday spills on the sill
Bright on the dish towel
I water a plastic plant
Like it might finally feel it
You left that spare key there
Like it was never a thing
I said the affair meant nothing
Yet I keep it where you can find it

Pre-Chorus

The kettle clicks once
The window hums back
My neighbor leans in easy
Like he already knows the shape

Chorus

Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
He asks who’s coming by
I smile and let it sit
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)

Verse 2

I tipped the pot again
Water ran straight through
Plastic never asks for much
So I give it that too
You know I never said stay
I never said go
That’s the joke with a key
It opens more than a door

Pre-Chorus

The neighbor says, “Someone?”
I say, “Maybe, maybe not”
He laughs like he’s harmless
Then studies what I’ve got

Chorus

Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
He asks who’s coming by
I shrug and let it sit
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)

Bridge

You can call it memory
You can call it a trick
I call it morning light
On a thing that won’t quit
If you come, come quiet
If you don’t, that’s fine
I keep the key in the sun
Like it might change its mind

Chorus

Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
He asks who’s coming by
I smile and let it sit
Leave it on the sill
(on the sill)
